1993's Bloody Kisses, Type O Negative's third and the last recording with their original lineup, marks their transition to their iconic gothic metal style. It was notably the first Roadrunner Records release to be certified Gold, in 1995. The album uniquely plays like one seamless composition when played in its entirety, and features some of their best known songs - "Black No. 1 (Little Miss Scare-All)", "Fay Wray Come Out and Play" and of course "Bloody Kisses" which became a cult classic, earning Type O Negative a devoted following and solidifying their place in the gothic metal scene.
Shortly after the release, the album got reissued by Roadrunner with an alternate track listing, revisiting the running order and removing all of the soundscape interludes and two tracks ("Kill All The White People" and "We Hate Everyone"), replacing them with a previously unreleased, over eight minute long & slow song, the title track "Suspended In Dusk". Shortly after the release, Peter Steele shared that the reissue was his opportunity to fix what he thought was a musical mistake.
The new title track "Suspended in Dusk" is an epitome of the band’s unique ability to create music that feels both intimate and cinematic. With run time over 8 minutes, it builds an oppressive yet strangely comforting atmosphere. Steele’s deep, haunting vocals are at the forefront, delivering lyrics that reflect themes of loss, despair, and the inexorable passage of time, that are as poetic as they are mournful. His baritone voice, often compared to that of Dracula, adds a vampiric allure to the song, pulling the listener into a world where dusk is eternal.
